San Francisco is known for its diverse neighborhoods, each with its own unique character, culture, and demographics. One key demographic factor that varies significantly across the city is the median age of residents. Based on the latest data from the United States Census Bureau, we can examine the median age by neighborhood in 2024.

The Younger Side of the Bay:

Neighborhoods like Treasure Island/YBI boast the youngest median age at 32.3, likely due to recent development and an influx of young professionals. The Marina (33.1), South of Market (34.7), and Haight Ashbury (34.7) also skew younger, potentially attracting a mix of young professionals, artists, and students. Presidio, with a median age of 34.2, and Potrero Hill at 35.7, also fall on the younger end of the spectrum.

Mid-Range Communities:

Many San Francisco neighborhoods fall within a mid-range of median ages. Areas like the Mission (36.8), Inner Sunset (37.2), Downtown/Civic Center (37.7), Nob Hill (38), Western Addition (38), and Bayview (38.5) reflect a balance of age groups. Communities such as Russian Hill (38.9), Inner Richmond (39.5), Lakeshore (39.4), and Excelsior (39.4) also occupy this middle ground. Glen Park (39.9), Noe Valley (40.1), Diamond Heights (40.1), and Bernal Heights (40.2) show similar median ages, suggesting established communities with a mix of families and professionals.

Areas with a More Mature Population:

Several neighborhoods exhibit a higher median age, indicating a more mature demographic. Chinatown, with a median age of 49.4, stands out as the oldest in the data set. West of Twin Peaks (48.2), North Beach (45.6), Parkside (45.6), Crocker Amazon (45), Seacliff (44.5), Golden Gate Park (44.6), Outer Sunset (43.8), Outer Richmond (43.1), Ocean View (42.3), Outer Mission (43), and Visitacion Valley (43.2) also fall into this category. These areas may be attractive to retirees, families who have aged in place, or individuals seeking a quieter, more established environment.
