Global electric vehicle sales are gaining momentum at a rapid pace, matching the swift acceleration of an EV.
In April, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projected a 35% surge in global electric vehicle (EV) sales for 2023, building on the already remarkable figures from 2022. Additionally, the IEA revised its outlook, anticipating that EVs could constitute 35% of new vehicle sales worldwide by 2030, a substantial increase from their previous estimate of less than a quarter just a year ago.
The IEA’s accelerated projections highlight the ongoing surge in electric vehicle (EV) demand, signaling significant implications for the global energy sector. The shift from traditional gas-powered vehicles to EVs is seen as promising news for the environment.
In 2022, global electric car sales exceeded 10 million, with the IEA anticipating a rise to 14 million in 2023. To put this into perspective, covering the same distance with gas-powered vehicles in a year would require over 832,000 tanker trucks of gas, as per an EPA calculator.
IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2023 report highlights a remarkable surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, soaring from 4% of overall sales in 2020 to 14% in 2022, with a projected increase to 18% this year. This growth is attributed to robust sales in major markets like China, Europe, and the United States, driven partly by shifts in government policies.
