Leaders Including Biden and Macron Express Solidarity with Israel After a Deadly Hamas Attack
President Joe Biden conveyed his backing for Israel during a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following a sudden attack by Palestinian militants that claimed numerous lives in Israel. “We are prepared to provide any necessary assistance to the Israeli government and its people,” Biden stated.
President Joe Biden, on Saturday, discussed his phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, expressing his support for Israel in the wake of a deadly attack by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
Biden stated, “I made it clear to Prime Minister Netanyahu that we are ready to provide any necessary support to the Government and people of Israel. Terrorism is never justified, and Israel has the right to defend itself and its citizens.”
This show of support from the U.S. President came after Netanyahu declared his country to be “at war” following a surprise attack by Palestinian militants, intensifying the long-standing conflict in the region. Israel’s emergency services organization, Magen David Adom, reported approximately 70 casualties in Israel, with hundreds more injured.
Israel’s counterattack on Gaza resulted in the deaths of approximately 200 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Biden emphasized that his administration’s support for Israel is unwavering, and he intends to stay closely connected with Netanyahu as the situation evolves.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that during the call with Biden, Netanyahu stressed the need for a forceful and extended campaign, asserting that Israel would emerge victorious.
Biden’s stance aligns with that of other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, both of whom expressed full support for Israel’s right to self-defense during their conversations with Netanyahu. The Council of the European Union also issued a statement backing Israel and called for lasting peace in the region.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the attacks and expressed support for Israel in a separate statement. He said, “We unequivocally condemn the appalling attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israel. We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Israel and extend our condolences for the Israeli lives lost in these attacks.”
