Data and Methodology : To determine the cost of retiring at 40 in each U.S. state, ProfessPost analyzed state-by-state data using cost-of-living indexes from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center and average retirement expenditures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey. By combining these figures, they calculated the average annual cost of living per state. Projected retirement costs were then estimated for various age ranges. Additional demographic data—including total population, households, and residents aged 65 and older—was sourced from the U.S. Census American Community Survey. All data is current as of March 25, 2025.
